The EDGE family welcomes a brilliant team of four PhD researchers this year:
Hannah, Henry, Lien and Ambroos.
Let's briefly introduce them!

Henry Maes is a PhD researcher at the Department of Political Science at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in joint supervision with the Institut de Sciences Politiques Louvain-Europe at UCLouvain. He holds a master’s degree in Political Sciences from UCLouvain. His research interests include polarization, social movements, and gender/LGBTQI+ issues.
Hannah Oorts is enrolled in a joint-PhD in an EUTOPIA-project, connected to both the department of Political Science at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick. She holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, as well an advanced Master’s degree in Cultural Anthropology and Development Studies from the KU Leuven. Her research explores the concepts of (political) representation and claim-making.
Lien Smets will start as a PhD researcher on the NotLikeUs project as per January 2023. At the moment she is a scientific collaborator on the Norface Undpolar project. Her interests include democratic innovations, behavioral insights, polarization, resentment, antidemocratic behavior and the relationship between civil society and government.
Ambroos Verwee is a PhD researcher at the Department of Political Science at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He holds a Master’s degree in Sociology from the KU Leuven and a Master’s degree in Political Science from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. His main research interests are political polarization, stereotypes and social media.
