As part of the new Migration Lecture Series, we are welcoming Andrew Geddes, chair of the Migration Policy Centre. In this Lecture, Andrew Geddes will discuss various insights from his book 'Governing Migration Beyond the State' together with Raul Hernandez Sagrera (Cabinet of Comissioner Ylva Johansson) and Tineke Strik (Group of the Greens; Member of the European Parliament). Prof. Florian Trauner will moderate the discussion.
REPERTOIRES OF MIGRATION GOVERNANCE IN THE EUROPEAN UNION
International migration has become a salient concern in global politics but it is very clear that there are significant variations in governance responses. Based on extensive fieldwork and more than 100 interviews as part of the ERC funded projects ‘Prospects for International Migration Governance’ this presentation will focus on the factors that shape governance responses in Europe. Rather than focusing on the more visible outputs or outcomes of governance processes such as laws and policies, the 'black box' of migration governance will be opened to reveal how understandings and representations of the causes and effects of migration held by key governance actors have powerful effects, not only on governance outcomes, but more broadly on the prospects for forms of migration governance beyond the state. By doing so, the presentation shows how migration governance systems through their operation and effects can shape migration — in its various forms — and the lived experiences of migrants.
