Dr. Lucie Drechselová (Czech Academy of Sciences) will present her book “Local Power and Female Political Pathways in Turkey” (Gender & Politics, Palgrave Macmillan, 2020).
The book is a contribution to studies on women’s underrepresentation in local politics. It provides an in-depth analysis of Turkey, a case often relegated to the periphery of the women & politics literature. In Turkey, paradoxically, women have been traditionally better represented in the parliament than in the municipal councils, its ruling party claims to have the largest women’s organization in the world, while the pro-Kurdish party have introduced a co-chairing system and near parity. The presentation will discuss these peculiarities as well as the main conclusions of the research built upon 200 interviews and a year-long ethnographic work in Turkey.

Bio
Postdoctoral fellow at the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Lucie Drechselová’s research bridges political sociology with memory studies. Her current research interests include autobiography, gender and Turkish political generations of the 1960s and 1970s. Her latest book titled “Local Power and Female Political Pathways in Turkey” was published in 2020 by Palgrave Macmillan. Associated member of the CETOBaC (EHESS-CNRS), she also teaches at the Charles University in Prague and Paris Institute of Political Science (SciencesPo). Her PhD was a join degree between Charles University in Prague and School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris. In 2019, Lucie Drechselová was awarded the Jacques Derrida Price in Social Sciences.
